Live Webinar Series: Young Children in Digital Society

This comprehensive four-part webinar series is based on the ARC research project on children and digital technologies. Aligned with the ECA Statement on Digital Technology, this series will explore key practices for supporting children as digital citizens. Each webinar covers a critical aspect of the statement: nurturing relationships, promoting health and wellbeing, cultivating digital citizenship, and integrating play and pedagogy in digital contexts. The project’s chief investigators will share their research findings, effective practices, and valuable resources developed through the project.

The series aims to share practical ideas to empower you in staying at the forefront of supporting young children in the digital world.

Registered participants will have access to the recordings for up to 6 months after the series ends.

Relationships

The first webinar is presented by Professor Andrea Nolan from Deakin University. In this webinar, Professor Nolan describes how Family Day Care educators supported peer-to-peer interactions between infants and toddlers (aged 8–36 months) using technologies (e.g., iPads, online songs, FaceTime, mobile applications, old mobile phones).

Health and Wellbeing

The second webinar is presented by Professor Leon Straker from Curtin University. In this webinar, Professor Straker explores how parents and carers used technologies (e.g., digital timers, video camera apps, television programs, online search engines) to encourage young children (aged 18–36 months) and their older siblings to be physically active and transition smoothly away from sedentary technology use to physical activity.

Play and Pedagogy

The third webinar is presented by Professor Sue Grieshaber from La Trobe University. In this webinar, Professor Grieshaber explains how early childhood educators integrated media (e.g., overhead projectors), popular culture (e.g., animated television programs enjoyed by young children), and digital technologies (e.g., augmented reality toys and associated apps) into classroom activities to support 3- to 5-year-old children’s play-based learning.

Citizenship

The fourth webinar is presented by Professor Susan Edwards from Australian Catholic University. In this webinar, Professor Edwards details how early childhood educators intentionally provided play-based learning experiences (e.g., exploring wooden iPads, laptops, smartphones, and wi-fi routers) specifically designed to heighten 3- to 5-year-old children’s understandings of the internet and awareness of online safety behaviours.
